Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Financial Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a unprecedented eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
