The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
