Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
