European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
